Plants
Although the emphasis has shifted in recent times to the retailing of plants, the nursery background and origins of the business are evident throughout the centre, and a significant proportion of the plants on offer are nurtured and grown on site. Staff are encouraged to enthuse about their subject, to be observant and inquisitive, and to get compost stuck under their fingernails! - though hopefully not entirely at the expense of customer service!!!
Our new polytunnel will enable even more of a home-grown offering this season, as well as providing additional covered shopping space on rainy days.
As you would expect our well stocked and clearly signed plant area offers year-round all the major plant categories - including Alpines, Bulbs, Herbs, Ferns, Grasses, Roses, Fruit Trees, Soft Fruit, Shrubs, Perennials & Ornamental Trees. In the early spring season we offer a wide range of young 9cm herbaceous perennials, all very competitively priced, and often on multi-buy deals. New this spring we will be stocking a delicious range of herbs in attractive eco pots courtesy of the Hairy Pot Plant Company. Watch this space! Also this spring we include for the first time a range of Aquatic plants including oxygenators and a stunning range of water lilies. As usual we will also be carrying an enormous selection of summer Bedding Plants, including ready-planted Hanging Baskets and seasonal containers.
The Good Life?!!!
Over the last couple of seasons we have experienced an ever-increasing demand for grow your own fruit and veg. So for those who are tempted by the good life it has never been easier to achieve a bumper harvest! While seed varieties continue to offer new challenges to the more experienced gardener, the real boom area has been the availability of ready raised seedling plants that have encouraged a whole new generation to ‘have a go’! That has got to be good news as more and more are encouraged to get outdoors and back to nature and away from TV and computer screens for fresh air and exercise. Tomatoes and potatoes have always been favourites but it is now possible to buy loads of different taste-bud ticklers such as pumpkins, peppers, chillies, cucumbers, aubergines, melons, courgettes, runner beans, broad beans, sweetcorn & strawberries.
Right Plant, Right Place? - Information:
Reference books are on hand at all times and staff will be happy to advise you on any g
ardening matter. While we do not pretend that we know it all we will always try to help you as best as we can to ensure that you find the right plant for the right place.
In caring for our stock we use only products that are available to our customers on the shelves, and so are well positioned to give advice. There is a sometimes confusing array of sundry products available to the amateur gardener, but guidance offered here will be based on our own conclusions as to the relative effectiveness of one brand over another. We also ensure that staff have regular updates on the components of the various chemicals and organic alternatives on offer, to ensure that they are as informed as possible.
