Our Top Five Bulbs for Guaranteed Spring Colour

Our Top Five Bulbs for Guaranteed Spring Colour

Spring bulbs have now arrived at Root One! As we transition from Summer to Autumn now is the perfect time to start planting next year’s Spring bulb display. At this time of year, the soil is still warm and therefore favourable conditions to develop a strong and healthy root system. We have compiled our top five Bulbs for guaranteed Spring colour and tips on how to plant them. Daffodils After a long cold, Winter the bright yellow Daffodil is a cheery sight in early Spring. The Daffodil is one of the most popular and reliable Spring-flowering bulbs, that come in a wide range of flower shapes, sizes and shades of yellow, orange and white. Daffodils prefer well drained soil that is kept moist during the growing season. Crocus The Crocus can bloom as early as February if its been a mild Winter and is considered one of the first signs of Spring by gardeners. Crocuses are perfect for creating a carpet of Spring colour as they often spread and form large clumps over the years. They also look particularly striking in borders, rockeries or planters. We have a wide range of Crocus bulbs including the larger Dutch varieties. Snowdrops Although the Snowdrop isn’t colourful as such it is still one of our favourites. Its one of the earliest Spring flowering bulbs which is a welcome assurance that brighter days are on the way. Tulip Tulips are a popular addition to a Spring garden and are perfect for creating impact and colour to...

Fun at the GAP Festival!

Fun at the GAP Festival!

Last weekend we were delighted to be involved in the GAP Festival – which started as an ambitious cultural project in 2014 aiming to bring outstanding art, music, literature and culture to the villages of Goring and Streatley. Joe Swift was on great form and spoke very well about both his personal life and his professional career working on Gardeners World. The main focus of his talk was his 2012 gold medal winning Chelsea garden and the pressures and logistics of pulling off this tremendous pressure feat. He was funny and inspiring and greatly enjoyed by all present. The Gardeners Q&A followed and the local panel (including our very own Jeremy) answered a series of questions from the audience covering such topics as gardening on chalky soil, wild flower meadows, and plants suited to difficult shady corners. All 5 panellists contributed their extensive combined knowledge and the hour passed very quickly and was again enjoyed by all who stayed. Root One was proud to be associated with such a prestigious local event and was well represented with a much admired display of plants currently on sale at the Garden Centre. #GAP18 #JoeSwift...
