We have a wide selection of beautiful summer-flowering bulbs that will bring impressive flower displays to your garden, not only do they look fabulous growing in borders or containers, but they also make excellent cut blooms to adorn your home too!

We have lots to choose from, including the highly popular dahlias, iris, lilies, gladioli, and anemone to name but a few. Many of our summer-flowering bulbs are hardy and only need to be planted once to enjoy blooms year after year, but some tender species such as dahlias and gladioli can’t survive the frost and should be lifted and stored over the Winter to be replanted again the next Spring.

Most Summer-flowering bulbs prefer a warm, sunny position, the sunlight and warmth help to make the plants grow faster and flower more abundantly, however begonias also do very well in shady spots. Dahlias and begonias flower all summer long while lilies and gladioli flower in shorter vibrant bursts.

Chocolate cosmos

Introduce a new scent to the garden with the luxurious, unique and velvety Chocolate cosmos, as the name suggests it has a distinct chocolaty fragrance that’s calorie free, so sniff away!
Chocolate cosmos is a tuberous-rooted, tender perennial with stunning dark red-brown blooms and slender stems that are perfect for creating height and interest to boards or containers.

Gladioli Seashore

Add some glorious gladioli to your garden. These blooms are excellent for providing blocks of colour and height to borders. Plant them in a sunny position in well drained, moisture retentive soil, and stake them as they grow to protect from strong winds. Gladioli make wonderful cut flowers to enjoy inside the home too, cut the spikes as soon as the first buds are colouring up for the best displays.

Ranunculus

Ranunculus put on quite a show with their brightly coloured ruffled petals! They are perfect for filling gaps in the front of borders and make a lovely addition to planters or containers. Remember to soak them in water an hour before planting as this helps to make the bulbs less brittle, plant shallow with the claws facing downwards in full sun to part shade in moist, well-drained soil.

Dahlia ‘Wine Eyed Jill’

Dahlias are a popular choice for gardeners for producing stunning flowers that last all summer long. No garden should be without this mixed-coloured beauty, it’s a gorgeous blend of peachy tones as well as yellows and creams, they create a mesmerising display and can look particularly effective planted as part of a mixed border. They make excellent cut flowers, with stems lasting up to a week in a vase and as an added bonus the more you cut them the more they grow.

How to plant Summer-flowering Bulbs

  • You should plant the bulb with the tip pointing upwards and the roots pointing downwards, this may seem obvious, but it can be difficult to tell which end of a bulb is the tip. If you can’t tell the tip from the roots, plant the bulb on its side.
  • Generally, bulbs should be planted twice the depth of the bulb.
Ideally, bulbs should be planted in well-drained, fertile soil, but in any case, grit should be added into the hole before planting.
  • Fill in the hole and compact gently.
