Summer Lawn Care

Keeping Your Grass Green During The Summer Months

As the warm weather continues (hopefully), the lawn may suffer from the heat and dry weather. Here are a few tips to keep your Summer lawn looking its best.

During the dryer months its important not to over-mow the lawn, this will weaken the grass and leave it vulnerable to lawn moss and weeds. Raise the blade on your mower slightly higher, this will also be beneficial for preventing weed germination and moisture loss. For a finishing touch use edging shears to cut away any long grass encroaching into the boarders. We recommend using long handled shears so you can do the job standing up without having to bend.

In dry weather without significant rainfall, its best to water your lawn thoroughly once a week rather than to lightly mist it every day. Early mornings or late afternoons are the best time to water so that the moisture can reach the roots before its evaporated by the heat of the sun. An easy way to thoroughly water a larger lawn is to use a hose and a sprinkler. We have a variety of watering tools in store but our favourites to use are the Hozelock sprinkler and hose from the Plus collection.

Rejuvenate your lawn with regular feeding, this helps to keep it lush and green whilst preventing weeds and moss establishing. We recommend Solabiol Top Lawn, it contains seaweed which naturally contains iron, a key nutrient for a thicker, greener and healthier lawn. This is a long-lasting feed that will continue to work for up to twice as long as other leading brands, its also child and pet safe.
Another favourite of ours is Johnsons Super Smart Lawn Feed. It contains three naturally occurring ingredients; bacteria to feed your lawn, Micronutrients to make the grass grow green, and Mycorrhizae to increase the roots.

Seeding and Repairing

The optimal time to sow grass seeds and repair your lawn is Spring or early Autumn, however it can also be achieved successfully during the Summer if extra care is given to watering regularly. Johnsons Quick Lawn Seed can be sown between March and October and is perfect for new lawns and for repairing patchy dead spots. Patch Magic is another great product to use for new lawns as it contains coir which expands to cover and protect the seed as well as aiding germination.
We are frequently asked how to fix dog urine patches from dog owners who want to maintain a healthy lawn. We recommend Miracle-Gro Patch Magic Dog Spot Repair; it contains gypsum which neutralises and repairs urine burns.

Aerating the lawn is another important step to maintaining a green lush lawn. Aeration is a process that involves making small holes in the soil with an Aeration tool and applying lawn sand containing a moss tonic. This helps facilitate the absorption of water, air and other essential nutrients.

Lawn Spreaders are helpful for speeding up the process and accuracy of feeding your lawn and distributing the feed evenly, to avoid burning the lawn.
Keep your borders looking crisp and neat by using a lawn edging tool, by separating the lawn from the borders it prevents weeds from growing in the flower beds. We recommend the new GreenKey Lawn Edge Trimmer, immaculate edging is easily achieved with each step.
